MacQueen Orchards has been owned and operated for over 65 years by Robert and Marlene MacQueen. On November 9th, 2013, we unexpectedly lost our devoted owner and operator, Robert MacQueen.
This is truly a family farm with many generations actively involved both full and part time.
Marlene will carry on with her four adult children, Jeff MacQueen as President, Bob MacQueen II as Vice President, Marlene MacQueen as Treasurer and Zachary MacQueen as Secretary. Lynn Gorey is our bookkeeper, and Cindy Kaiser, a now retired school teacher, helps with pick-your-own with her husband, Sam.
The MacQueen Orchards began in 1936 when the first apple tree was planted by the late Hugh and Martha MacQueen, father and mother of Robert. Ten acres of the 25 acre farm were planted to apples. Martha and Hugh would gather their fruit each day in bushel baskets and take them by truck to Toledo to supply area fruit stands and markets.
In 1954, Robert graduated from high school and chose to stay on the farm to help his dad. Together they began planting apples and peaches on 15 more acres of ground. They also built an 8000 bushel cold storage to help preserve the quality and freshness of the fruit harvested and sold on the farm and to wholesale outlets. A packing house was erected, and the dairy barn was converted to a salesroom.
Bob and Marlene were married in 1956 and started their family—Cindy, Jeff, Lynn and Bobby.
Soon, they purchased another 160 acres, and they built a retail and wholesale business, open year round.
Another cold storage was built in 1962 with the capacity of storing 33,000 bushels of apples.
An 11,600 bushel controlled atmosphere storage was built in 1995, and another 9,000 bushel unit was added in 2006. In 2009, yet another 8,000 square feet was added to the wholesale packing facilities, which included office space, break room and restrooms.
In 2013, before Bob passed, he guided the boys through erecting a state of the art computerized apple dumper, grading, and sorting machine from New Zealand. They were always on the cutting edge of technology. This was his dream!
Following Bob’s lead, in 2015 the boys upgraded the cider mill by purchasing a new state of the art cider press.
A new 10,000 bushel cold storage was built in June of 2018 to accommodate increased production.
In 1979, Cindy (MacQueen) Kaiser married Sam Kaiser, who is a retired Superintendent of the Ohio Turnpike Commission. Cindy is a retired school teacher, and she and Sam help with the Pick Your Own Orchard. Both of their daughters were recently married.
In 2011, Kasey Jo married Richie Gibson and they have a son, Kaiser Champion.
Kara Jo married Bradley Wilson in 2010, and two daughters, Jordi who was born in 2012 and Lola who born in 2015.
Jeff MacQueen is President of MacQueen Orchards. Jeff graduated from high school and, like his dad, insisted on staying on to help his father with the orchard.
Jeff married Jodey in 1980 and together they have three sons, Arin Jeffrey, Zachary Hugh, and Spencer Joseph. They live on the farm. Jeff handles orchard management.
Arin Graduated from The Ohio State University in 2006 and is now a successful Financial advisor. In 2015, Arin married Rachel Ramlow who is a 3rd grade school teacher. You’ll see them on the weekends running the kiddie rides out front. The two have two daughters, Mya, born in 2017 and Marin, born in 2019.
Their son Zachary completed his degree at The Ohio State University and has entered the family business in operations. He is now secretary of MacQueen Orchards. In May of 2012, Zach MacQueen married Allison Florian. Allison is an insurance agent at her family insurance agency. Together they have four daughters, Olivia Grace, born in 2015, Ella Marie, born in 2017, Meredith Rene, born in 2019, and Remy Kate born in 2022.
Spencer also attended Ohio State and has also chosen to join the family business as well. Spencer married Kellsey Kolanko in December 2018. Their daughter, Charlie Rose, was born in April of 2022 and son, Carter Jeffrey, was born in 2023.
Bob MacQueen II is vice-president of MacQueen Orchards, and married Amy Wynn in 2009. Amy works full time for Ohio Operating Engineers Apprenticeship, and also helps out in the MacQueen's farm market and with the pick-your-own.
Bob and Amy have a young daughter, Mallory Roberta born November 2010.
Lynn (MacQueen) Gorey is the bookkeeper for MacQueen Orchards. In 1988, Lynn married Michael Gorey. Michael is self-employed in environmental compliance and waste brokering. Lynn and Michael have a son, Logan Gorey who graduated from Ohio University in 2020 and is now employed at Verdantas. They also enjoy working on the farm in the fall.
